International Conference “Saint Martin, Forerunner of the Creation of Christian Chivalric Orders”, 24 April in Arad, Transylvania (Romania)

In a few days I will be making my way through Hungary and then on to Arad in Transylvania, Romania to this wonderful international conference on the Knightly Christian Orders (24 April) where I’ll be lecturing with 43 speakers, sharing some of my dissertation research on the Knights Templar for my recently awarded MA in Public History & Cultural Heritage (Hons) by the University of Limerick.

My talk will feature part of my MA dissertation research on the Knights Templar and their very distinct religion, as well as the central role of the sacred feminine within the order, suppressed by Christianity and academia.

I am delighted to attend and deeply grateful to have been invited to this event by the Templar Sovereign Order of St Martin and the Medieval Museum of Arad, Transylvania (Romania).

I’m also looking forward to meeting and sharing with other scholars in this field and to visiting this wonderful historic Central European region that was so crucial to the Christian military orders, beginning already with Godfrey of Bouillon even before the first Crusade, as Hungary (Transylvania then being a part of medieval Hungary) became the safest passage to the Holy Land by all these brave knights and alternative to the Sea Route.

CONFERENCE INFO AND DETAILS:

In an era marked by rapid transformation and the fragmentation of values, the figure of Saint Martin re-emerges as a guiding reference point for Christian ethics, spiritual chivalry, and responsibility toward one’s fellow human beings. His legacy continues to inspire academic reflection on the relationship between tradition, cultural identity, and the moral values embraced in contemporary society.

Following the success of the first edition held in 2024, the second edition of the International Conference “Saint Martin, Forerunner of the Creation of Christian Chivalric Orders” aims to further explore, from interdisciplinary perspectives, the spiritual, cultural, and historical role of Saint Martin, as well as the influence of the Christian chivalric ideal in shaping both European and regional identity.

📅 The event will take place on 24 April 2026
🕙 Time: 10:00 AM
📍 “King Ferdinand” Hall, Arad City Hall

The conference is organised through an extensive institutional partnership, bringing together the Prefect’s Institution of Arad County, Arad City Hall, Arad County Council, the Arad County Cultural Centre, the “Alexandru D. Xenopol” County Library of Arad, the Arad Museum Complex, “Aurel Vlaicu” University of Arad, “Vasile Goldiș” Western University of Arad, the “Sabin Drăgoi” Arts College of Arad, the Romanian Society of Historical Sciences – Arad Branch, the “ASTRA Arădeană – 1863” Association, the “Ioan Slavici” Centre for Literary History and Theory, the “Ștefan Cicio-Pop” Association, the Union of Professional Journalists of Romania – “Ioan Slavici” Arad Branch, the Romanian Post, and the Association of the Sovereign Templar Order of Saint Martin.

The conference themes include original research directions on imagological, cultural, and historical representations in the Mureș Valley region, such as the Salt Route, signs of early Christianity, the relationship between Saint Martin and chivalry, and the role of Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries in the spiritual and cultural development of the region.

We warmly invite you to join us on Friday, 24 April 2026, from 10:00 AM, in the “King Ferdinand” Hall of Arad City Hall, to explore the past, present, and future through the lens of nobility and courage—fundamental values of chivalry and of humanity itself.
