“Born to destroy kings, born to reshape the world, born to horrify and break and remake, born to endure and never be erased. Hekate Medea, more than god and more than woman, alive now, in the time of origin.”
― David Vann, Bright Air Black
Hekate is a controversial chthonic goddess that has been worshipped throughout many centuries, cultures and nations. Her name in Greek means "she who comes from afar" and although her origins are mysterious, she has been popularly known as a controversial Hellenistic goddess. However, she is believed to have originated much earlier in Asia Minor, more specifically in South-West Turkey. Hekate rules over many things and is the perfect crossroads where three different roads meet: historical, mythological, and magickal. She is the goddess of magic, witchcraft, the night, the moon, ghosts, and necromancy. But she also rules over the elements as the only child of the Titan Perses and nymph Asteria from whom she received her power over heaven, earth, and sea. As a divine feminine energy, Hekate began to be associated with darkness when Christianity eradicated the divine feminine worship and marginalised women, but this powerful goddess of light and darkness is also a protector and creator. An earth mother, who can bestow wealth and all the blessings of daily life, while protecting us.
According to the Neoplatonist philosopher Porphyry, Hekate's triple goddess form (Hekate Triformis) represented the phases of the moon: new, waxing, and full. These phases also symbolises the three stages of a woman (maiden, mother, and crone). But Hekate is also the goddess of liminal places such as crossroads in her Hecate Triodos form and as such, she rules over thresholds between realms, life, and death, night and day. Hekate is also the keeper of the keys to the underworld's secrets which she protects together with the black hellhounds. In Greek mythology, out of all the Gods, Hekate was the only one to assist Demeter in her search for Persephone when she was abducted by Hades, the lord of the Underworld. Although she could not rescue her, she chose to keep her company and her light in darkness until she could be reunited with her mother. And thus, when we experience grief, our own underworld, we can call out to Hekate to guide us through those dark times (which are necessary, and often teach us the most).
Learn about the dark and light aspects of this triple goddess and how you can embody her powerful elemental energy as an archetype. Allow Hekate's wisdom to empower you, inspire you and guide you through life, especially in the darkest moments or through the difficult post-pandemic times we are still experiencing.
